Multimodal Neuroimaging Laboratory

Integrating multiple imaging technologies for a dynamic new perspective human brain physiology.

The focus of our research program is the study human brain physiology with noninvasive imaging technologies. Our approach work includes (1) multimodal data fusion bridging neural electromagnetic signals with vascular hemodynamics, (2) modeling brain physiology to interpret neuroimaging data, and (3) clinical translation for diagnosis and monitoring of neurodegenerative diseases and brain injury. We have the capability to image cerebral hemoglobin dynamics with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), and neural activity with electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). Our multimodal approach permits us to investigate the complex relationship between cerebral neural activity and cerebral hemodynamics.

The complexity of the human brain and technical challenges of neuroimaging require a multidisciplinary approach to engineering problem solving and a research team with diverse talents. The technical proficiencies of our team range from mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering to signal processing and inverse problems. A strong basis of understanding in human physiology, biological physics, and neuroscience is also required. Together these disciplines and research questions make for a fun and exciting exploration of the frontiers of human understanding about the brain.
